Baseline Breath
A short daily breathing practice for a nervous system that has been running on high alert. Practiced regularly, it lets your body rehearse settling, so that calm can gradually become your new resting baseline.
The technique is cyclic sighing. Breathe in through your nose, take a second short sip of air through your nose, then sigh slowly out through your mouth. The ball makes a short climb as you breathe in, pauses at the stone for the top-up, and rolls down the long side of the hill as you sigh out.
Created by Sami BadawyTechnique based on a Stanford Medicine study of cyclic sighing (Balban et al., 2023)
Includes about 30 seconds to settle in and a gentle close. Keep the breath soft; if you feel light-headed, slow down or stop. On iPhone, turn off silent mode to hear the bowls. Use this as one part of your wider care protocol.
How settled do you feel?
Take one ordinary breath and notice your body. How much ease do you feel right now?
Notice your ease
Before you move on, take a moment. How much ease do you notice in your body and breath now?
Your baseline over time
Each session records how settled you felt before and after. Your "before" rating is your resting baseline. With regular practice, watch whether it slowly rises.
Your sessions will appear here after your first practice.
How your history is kept
Your sessions are saved in this browser on this device. You don't need to sign in: come back on the same device and browser, and your progress will be here.
- A different phone, computer or browser starts fresh with a new ID.
- Private or incognito windows don't keep your history.
- Clearing your browser's history or site data erases it from this device.
Copy your ID and keep it somewhere safe, such as a note on your phone. It's the only way to bring your history to another device.
Use your ID on another device
- On the device you usually practice on, open My progress and tap Copy ID.
- On the new device, open this page, go to My progress, and enter that ID below.
- Tap Load my history. From then on, both devices record your sessions under the same ID.
Only sessions you chose to share with your practitioner can be loaded, since those are the only ones saved beyond the original device.
